Self-Sustainability

Do you know what it means to have self-sustained lifestyle in terms of how you obtain your food?

If so, do you feel that this is something you could implement in your own life? Why or why not?

  1. I believe that being self-sustained means helping to save the soil (Earth ultimately) one garden at a time. I believe that it is very important for everyone who is able to participate. Currently I do no think that it is something that I could do because I currently live in a dorm and will then be living in an apartment for the next few years and will not be able to have a garden or even a yard, but one day I really hope to have a nice greenhouse to grow produce and herbs year-round.

    1. I'm also limited by living in a dorm! Look out for a future post on container gardening. :) It is quite a stretch from a self-sustained operation, but it's a great start.

  2. Self-sustainability, in its most basic form, is the act and process by which an individual (or household) is able to provide for itself internally without a majority of external assistance. In terms of food production and consumption, it is both a fiscally responsible and healthy method to provide oneself with home-grown produce. At this point in time, I am not able to implement such a system, mainly due to the fact that I am not a decision maker within my household, as well as a number of other minor reasons (living space, neighborhood/community zoning regulations, etc.). Personally, however, I do not see myself implementing a self-sustainable garden for myself in the near future.
